چکیده

Earthquakes occur on the earth’s surface as a result of rearrangement of terrestrial cortex or higher part of the mantle. The energy released in this process propagates over long distances in the form of elastic seismic waves [1]. In order to predict earthquakes many models have been proposed [2, 3]. Dynamics of an earthquake is so complicated that it is quite difficult to predict using available models. Seismicity is a classic example of a complex phenomenon that can be quantified using fractal concepts [4]. In this paper we have estimated the fractal dimension, maximum, as well as minimum of the singularities, and the half-width of the multifractal spectrum of the El Salvador Earthquake signal at different stations. The data has been taken from the California catalogue (http://nsmp.wr.usgs.gov/nsmn eqdata.html). The paper has been arranged as follows: In section 2 the basic theory of multifractality has been discussed, and the results have been presented in section 3 .

Fractal analysis of the ULF geomagnetic data obtained at Izu Peninsula, Japan in relation to the nearby earthquake swarm of June?August 2000

In our recent papers we applied fractal methods to extract the earthquake precursory signatures from scaling characteristics of the ULF geomagnetic data, obtained in a seismic active region of Guam Island during the large earthquake of 8 August 1993. We found specific dynamics of their fractal characteristics (spectral exponents and fractal dimensions) before the earthquake: appearance of the f...

Scaling characteristics of ULF geomagnetic fields at the Guam seismoactive area and their dynamics in relation to the earthquake

The long-term evolution of scaling (fractal) characteristics of the ULF geomagnetic fields in the seismoactive region of the Guam Island is studied in relation to the strong (Ms = 8.0) nearby earthquake of 8 August 1993. The selected period covers 10 months before and 10 months after the earthquake. The FFT procedure, Burlaga-Klein approach and Higuchi method, have been applied to calculate the...

Fractal dimension and earthquake frequency-magnitude distribution in the North of Central-East Iran Blocks (NCEIB)

The Gutenberg–Richter parameters (a and b), fractal dimension (DC), and relationships between these parameters are calculated for different regions of the North of Central-East Iran Blocks (NCEIB). The whole examined area (between 34°-36° N and 55°-61° E) is divided into 55 equal square grids. Both the a and b values for the frequency-magnitude distribution (FMD) and the fractal dimension (DC) ...

Chaotic Analysis and Prediction of River Flows

Analyses and investigations on river flow behavior are major issues in design, operation and studies related to water engineering. Thus, recently the application of chaos theory and new techniques, such as chaos theory, has been considered in hydrology and water resources due to relevant innovations and ability. This paper compares the performance of chaos theory with Anfis model and discusses ...

Analysis of Resting-State fMRI Topological Graph Theory Properties in Methamphetamine Drug Users Applying Box-Counting Fractal Dimension

Introduction: Graph theoretical analysis of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data has provided new measures of mapping human brain in vivo. Of all methods to measure the functional connectivity between regions, Linear Correlation (LC) calculation of activity time series of the brain regions as a linear measure is considered the most ubiquitous one. The strength of the dependence obl...
